Not So Little J

As far as our littlest Gossip Girl is concerned, there's been quite a buzz about her sartorial choices. First of all, Taylor Momsen's character Jenny is going through quite a fashion transformation of her own. I find it quite interesting to follow, with events like her "guerrilla fashion show" being completely mesmerizing, but I do think she needs to tone down the makeup a tad.

The main reason Taylor Momsen's been receiving so many comments about her fashion is cause she's only 15! And while it's amazing that a 15 year old gets to have an amazing experience like this at such a young age, it also probably sucks that she's quite a bit younger than her castmates. Granted, she's a gorgeous, old-looking 15-year-old, but I'd imagine that it stinks to be younger than everyone around you. Everyone keeps talking about how what she's wearing is "too mature" or that she should be wearing "more youthful" styles, but I can kind of see why she's dressing older for her age. She's always seen around with her castmates, and I know that I wouldn't want to be wearing floral sundresses when I'm surrounded by a bunch of hot young things dressed in fashion-forward, exposed outfits. She probably wants to look just as good as the people around her, and I completely don't blame her for that. So while I'm sure many moms would like to stick her in outfits like this one from Design History all the time...


...I'm sure T. Momsen would reserve that dress for a daytime lunch event, if that. If I were her stylist, I'd try for something like this dress from Dolce Vita:


It's cute and short, but the poufy hem isn't too slinky. Plus, I absolutely adore the colour. I don't know if Taylor's like Natalie in that she doesn't like asymmetric hemlines, but I happen to love them and I hope she does as well.

However, if even that is too youthful for Taylor (and I wouldn't blame her if she felt that way,) then I would suggest this Alexander Wang dress. I like the vest detail and think that it's really modern and hip. Plus, the outfit has enough rocker to satisfy our slightly punky Momsen.

R.I.P. Fanny Pak

I was so sad to hear that Fanny Pak was eliminated from America's Best Dance Crew. Yeah, some may dismiss the show as yet another MTV cash cow, but I've definitely fallen for the show's creative choreography. Though I may retain my love for Kaba Modern, I'm not so sure about this year's "similar" group, SoRealCru. They started out pretty strong, but I think they've succumbed to the MTV effect -- namely, they've started churning out more and more routines that try to grab attention...and not in a good way.

Anyway, I decided to create an outfit that reflects Fanny Pak's outgoing nature and bright neon colour scheme. Check out the lightning earrings; their banner on the show featured a lightning icon.

You're My Inspiration

...My My, How Can I Resist You?

So that van Gogh notebook got me thinking about Starry Night, and the beautiful colour combinations of the painting. I'm no artist, and my knowledge of colour palettes is limited to that little wheel I see at Blick and Office Depot that automatically matches colours for you. But even with my limited art knowledge, I can still appreciate the gorgeous tones of the painting.

Because my expression comes more from fashion than from a paintbrush, here's my own, Shopbop-induced 5-minute van Gogh.

Angela Keslar's Rosettes

Yesterday I spent a large portion of my day watching Project Runway reruns. Though these were from Season 1, where I fell in love with all of Kara Saun's designs, I started thinking back to a couple of the old designers. As you may remember, my own style incorporates a lot of girly details, including fabric flowers. So, it seemed appropriate that Angela Keslar, a designer from the 3rd season of Project Runway, came to my mind. She was one of the more "eccentric" designers, and her trademark was a fabric rosette.


While I was browsing the Shopbop sale later that day, I came upon this necklace and pair of earrings, which look scarily like Angela's rosettes. They're from Malababa; the necklace is on sale for $47.50 and the earrings are on sale for $32.50.



Which led me to wonder...maybe Angela was onto something with her rosette idea? She may have been a little bit different from the other designers, but maybe the simple sewing up of fabric wasn't such a bad idea. I'm still unsure, though it seems like fabric flowers is a bit of a mainstream idea and it's a trend now just because of the desire to make your clothes different and slightly kitschy. In addition, I personally am not a huge fan of her specific rosettes, namely the type of rosettes made by taking a circle of fabric and sewing it all up in the center. This may sound prissy but I prefer more refined rosettes, even if my overall look is supposed to be kitschy.
