Promenade Attire, Part Seven In Person

So while a picture of my dress on a mannequin is telling and everything...here's a real-life picture. Please note...I am slightly yellower in this picture because I had to mess with some of the colours so that the picture would give an accurate representation of the dress.

I don't need to hem it, right? I'll probably be wearing higher heels than I am in this picture (not that you can see them...)

Promenade Attire, Part Six

Okay, I swear this is the last post about prom related matters, but I just wanted to give a dress update. I did receive the previous dress in the mail, but it was too large and the alterations would have been complex and expensive. Plus, even if I did get it altered, the skirt would be kind of poufy, and the chest area would be far too big (sigh!). And finally, in terms of practicality, while I love white dresses with all my heart, the only occasion that I could ever think of that calls for a prom-style dress is a fancy wedding. If I am lucky enough to attend one, I am fairly sure that a white dress would not be appropriate.

So, here's the new one!


I know the photo may not have the same "wow" factor as the other picture, but it just came in the mail today and I love it! I do have a slight tingling of discomfort as the colour is a tad bit brighter than this picture and I am usually seen in varying shades of beige, black, and perhaps white, but I do like the colour with my skintone. Also, the dress was just about the same price...unfortunately it's sold out at Bluefly, where I got it for about $230 or so.

Promenade Attire, Part Five

So here's my likely choice for a prom dress:


It may look a little wedding-y, but I love the vintage feel of the dress. The beading and the silhouette make it seem like it's a true evening gown and not simply a frou-frou prom dress. I also love the fact that it was under $200, and I secretly enjoy that it's not from BCBG. However, I could very well end up wearing a BCBG dress if this one doesn't work out, so I shouldn't get too cocky.

It's coming in the mail as I write this, but I'm hoping the size isn't too big for me...the biggest one was 2, and I'm usually a 0, so we shall see.

Promenade Attire, Part Three

I've really tried to stay away from dresses that fit into the typical "prom" category, like these:

There isn't anything wrong with brightly coloured, satiny, heavily embellished dresses, it's just that for some reason they aren't exactly my style. I'm having an internal debate as to whether I want a cocktail dress or a long dress, but I know for sure that I don't want any sort of calf-length thing (which would make me look ever shorter than I am).



Anyway, what do you guys think of this one? It's on sale for $261 at Saks, which isn't too bad for a prom dress. Plus, it's the type of dress I could re-use for other soirees. The colour's bright for my typical neutral loving self, but I think that the red would work pretty well with my semi tanned skintone and dark hair. Plus, the slim silhouette would work with my small and skinny shape.

So, as you may know, this year is my senior year in high school. Which, to a fashion-loving gal, means one thing: prom.

I've been browsing quite a few sites lately, in search of the perfect prom frock. I'm trying not to go overboard on the cost, while still looking for a dress that isn't typical. Because of my height (a meager 5"2'), I'm going to aim for a cocktail dress, especially because it'll be much easier to wear later on in life.

My first stop was Saks Fifth Avenue, where I sadly was only able to find one dress that truly captivated me. Sure, there were many pretty ones, but I wasn't truly taken by many of them. I'm sure if I look again in a few weeks I'll have a change of heart, but for now, here is prom pick number 1.


Personally, I'm all about the neutral colours, so this white and black combination is great. The bodice works well with a strapless bra, and would probably flatter a small figure. I'm a little worried about two things: first, since the dress is split up into two colours, it might make me look shorter than I am, and second, the skirt might be a little overwhelmingly poufy. However, this dress is still staying on my list, especially since it reminds of my favourite Project Runway contestant ever: Leanne Marshall!

Prom at Bloomingdales

If you're a high school senior, 'tis the season for pretty dresses! With prom and graduation recently coming to a close for all of the high school alumni out there, and mine being only next year, I started getting into my own fashion mode. It may be an entire year away, but...it's always good to stay ahead of the game right?

I decided to try out a department store known for classy evening dresses, Bloomingdales. This definitely is not the cheapest as far as dresses are concerned; at the same time, the prices could be a lot worse. This year at prom, I noticed that a lot of girls at my own school had abandoned the traditional long, beaded, frou-frou gowns that are typically associated with prom and instead went for chic cocktail dresses with interesting details that made them stand out from the crowd.

For my tanner skintone, I decided that white would be a good option; not many girls would be wearing it, but it would still stay true to my style palette of white, black, and beige without being too basic. I found two dresses that satisfied the criteria of being chic white cocktail dresses with enough detail to make them stand apart from the crowd. The one on top is from Lauren Ralph Lauren, and I love the detailing but I'm wary about the idea of wearing a belted dress to my (future) prom. The one on the bottom is absolutely gorgeous; the shutter pleats add interesting details while still maintaining a figure-flattering sheath silhouette.



Not counting the white dresses above, if I was dress shopping I'd probably go for a subdued colour, either very pale or very dark. The dress on top is another gorgeous find from BCBG with a very classic combo of an A-line skirt and a sweetheart neckline. To me, it's like the stereotypical poufy prom dress, reinvented. Though the dress on the bottom probably fits the graduation slot more accurately, I still can't help but love the old school halter neckline.



If, however, I decided to splash out and try a louder colour, I'd go for something without a lot of fussy details. I was able to find two dresses that incorporate a cute bow into their design, perfect for my bow-loving self. The first is a fire-engine red dress, which has a figure-hugging silhouette (perfect for little me!) and a tilted bow perched on its side. The second is a silk dress in an unbelievably gorgeous shade of blue. This one might not work for everyone, as its silhouette is sort of boxy and doesn't really flatter many figures, but it could also go both ways, as a graduation dress or a prom dress, depending on how formal those occasions are at your particular school.
